PSV signed Ledezma, 22 years old, from Real Salt Lake in 2018. However, he was only able to make 22 appearances with the first team due to a torn ACL which occurred in December 2020.
New York City Football Club (NYCFC) is reportedly in talks to loan USMNT midfielder Richie Ledezma from Dutch side PSV. The 22-year-old, who joined the Eredivisie outfit from Major League Soccer’s Real Salt Lake in 2018, has seen his time with PSV hampered by injury problems, including a torn ACL that ruled him out for most of the 2020-21 campaign.
Ledezma has represented the USMNT on six occasions since making his debut against Jamaica in September 2019, and despite his injury troubles this season still managed to appear 22 times for PSV’s first team in all competitions since his arrival at the Philips Stadion – scoring three goals and providing four assists.
Despite the relatively short career so far, Ledezma is highly rated by scouts across Europe and appears to have caught the eye of NYCFC boss Ronny Deila, who is said to be keen on bringing him to MLS.

If successful, Ledezma could offer NYCFC an extra option in midfield as they look to bolster their squad ahead of their 2021 season – currently set to kick off in late March – with their sights set on challenging for a first MLS Cup. Reports suggest that Deila will be looking for extra quality additions throughout his roster as he seeks to improve upon last year’s performance which saw them finish third in Eastern Conference standings before bowing out of the playoffs at the knockout stage.
Ledezma may also gain more senior international caps should he join NYCFC on loan; as well as potentially proving himself a valuable asset for Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT ahead of this summer’s CONCACAF Gold Cup tournament.
At present it remains unclear whether Ledezma will make the move stateside this month, however what’s certain is that if he does arrive at NYCFC he’ll be sure to attract plenty of attention wearing the iconic USMNT soccer jersey when playing at Yankee Stadium.
Ledezma could certainly offer that quality, and despite the injury issues over the past year he still has plenty of time to realize his undoubted potential and become a key part of NYCFC’s first team. We’ll have to wait and see if this move is made official in the coming days or weeks, but for now it looks like PSV and Ledezma are keen on finding a loan solution with the American club.
The transfer window is open until February 1st, so any deal should be finalized before then if Deila hopes to add Ledezma officially. The USMNT midfielder could prove a great asset for the club as they bid for glory this season, and it will be interesting to see if the reported loan move between PSV and NYCFC comes to fruition.
